I blog primarily over at "geosciblog" (http://geosciblog.blogspot.com), I am doing this one for fun. It is inspired by 30+ years of beer can collecting and having tried more than 3,000 different American beers during that time. “. . . And beer was drunk with reverence, as it ought to be.” — G. K. A Surprisingly Drinkable Beer...

from Schlitz (actually contract-brewed by Miller). Schlitz High Gravity V.S.L. (Very Smooth Lager), 8.5% alcohol content.

While visiting a local liquor store, I was checking out some of the 24 oz. cans and I noticed a new brand. It is an attractive black, gold, and silver colored can, emblazoned with the Schlitz Malt Liquor bull motif.

When I opened the can (from the bottom), I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. The beer was surprisingly smooth and drinkable and there was no "alcohol taste" that one might expect with a mass-marketed high-gravity lager.

My friend "mytmalt" said that at the Beer Advocate website, the sole reviewer of this brand gave similar reviews.

Schlitz is a lot better than a lot of people realize.

I'm pro schlitz.

Matt;

Thanks for dropping by.

Last year, a couple of my friends went to a beer can show in Minnesota and they found bottled Schlitz that was made to the 1965 recipe and they said it was quite good. Supposedly, it was being done on a test-market basis in Minnesota and Florida. I haven't been able to find any mention of this on the internet.

I will be in Destin, FL for my daughter's wedding this next weekend, so I may call the local Miller distributor to see if they have any of this "retro" Schlitz.

Yes, of course I would be down for that! I'm not much of a trader but I am sure I can find something for you, being from one of the largest cities in the world and all!

2 bottles of this would make my month. No pressure, haha.

They recently started selling this in San Francisco and I was shocked ....it was great.

I'm an old school Schlitz fan from my days in Venice Beach not long ago...3.99 for a sixer of Schlitz tall boys from the Korean market 2 blocks away...great drink on a hot 90 degree evening in the summer on the ocean...of course we DID have a German-Swiss bar with 2.00 imported beers at happy hour...but that's happy hour....after that..the schitlz was the shiznit.
